Facilities Assignment
NOLA Public Schools is the owner of most of the buildings our schools occupy in New Orleans. While some schools have a building guarantee in law, others must request a lease of an available building or secure a private facility. Schools become available as a result of school non-renewals, schools moving their programs to other buildings, or when construction is completed on an occupants long-term home. Schools may submit their interest to the OPSB administration for buildings when they become available. OPSB announces facility availability due to lease expiration or construction through our schools newsletter. Requests are considered by administration and the superintendent focusing on the organization’s need, community support, citywide need, their capacity to add high quality seats to the system, and potential to improve the facility. When construction on a facility will be required, the administration may assign organizations to a location on a short-term lease while construction is planned or occurring.

Responses to the September 2023 Request for Ideas (RFI) NOLA-PS has received responses to the RFI and is issuing them publicly to foster dialogue around potential community-driven redevelopment opportunities for these surplus properties. Readers should note that responding organizations were also allowed to provide ideas about the reuse or redevelopment of OPSB properties that are not yet on the surplus list. However, the future status of any properties that are not currently surplus remains undecided, and no commitments have been made by NOLA-PS or OPSB to surplus or vacate additional properties at this time. Ideas submitted through this RFI will not be selected or “chosen” for any particular property at this point in time. Responses to this RFI will help to continue the public dialogue that NOLA-PS began during its Surplus Property Strategy and will assist NOLA-PS in understanding how to shape future official Requests for Proposals (RFPs). NOLA-PS issued a “Request for Ideas” for the reuse of Orleans Public School Board (OPSB) surplus vacant school properties in September 2023. Community organizations, non-profits, members of the real estate development community, and local residents were invited to submit ideas for reuse of the following properties on the School Board surplus list: Israel M. Augustine (425 S. Broad St.); Valena C. Jones (1901 N. Galvez St.); Thomas Edison (1339 Forstall St.); Johnson C. Lockett (3240 Law St.); and A.P. Tureaud (2021 Pauger St.).
