Name Submissions for NOLA-PS’ Facility Renaming Initiative Ends Friday

(New Orleans – April 28, 2021) – NOLA Public Schools (NOLA-PS) will be accepting name recommendations for school buildings through 11:59PM Friday, April 30, 2021 on its Facility Renaming Initiative.

We encourage the public to provide suggestions the District should consider as it moves forward with renaming 21 school facilities that currently honor figures from our painful past. The District is seeking name recommendations that honor great figures from our local and national community. These include comments on names the renaming committee has already received, as well as newly proposed names.

Below is a list of suggested names NOLA-PS has received so far:

NOLA-PS is New Orleans, and so we need the voices of our neighbors, families, and friends to help guide us through this process.

There are two ways the community can provide name recommendations through Friday, April 30, 2021.

  1. Email suggestions to: community@nolapublicschools.com
  2. Mail suggestions to: Renaming Initiative - 2401 Westbend Pkwy, Ste. 5096, New Orleans, LA 70114

Once the period for name submissions closes on April 30th, the Renaming Initiative website page will be updated Monday, May 3, 2021 and showcase the final list of name recommendations given by the public.

A public meeting will be held Wednesday, May 5, 2021 at 4:30PM to receive further suggestions on the final list of names and what buildings they should be matched with. For further details, visit: https://nolapublicschools.com/renaming

The Orleans Parish School Board (OPSB) believes all schools should be welcoming, inclusive, and inspiring places for all students. OPSB is seeking to ensure the names of these physical school facilities, and the people that we honor through naming, reflect the values of the school district.

The School Board is fundamentally opposed to retaining names of school facilities named for persons who were slave owners, confederate officials, or segregation supporters.

The renaming process will be guided by a Renaming Committee. In accordance with OPSB policy, this committee consists of a school board member appointed by the OPSB president; a representative of the NOLA-PS administration; and community members approved by the superintendent.

The renaming committee will consider public feedback, historical context, and local community ties of persons, places, or historical events to be honored. They will also be tasked with putting forth name recommendations for facilities that have been approved to move forward in the Facilities Renaming Initiative. As qualified renaming recommendations are proposed, the committee will consider public feedback, historical context, and local community ties of persons, places, or historical events to be honored to guide recommendations.

The Renaming Committee will be responsible for submitting renaming recommendations to the superintendent, who will ultimately present the final recommendation to the OPSB.
