Job Announcement: Superintendent of New Orleans Public Schools (NOLA-PS)

Location: New Orleans, LA

Salary Range: $275,000 - $315,000 (based on experience)

About Our District

Our district serves approximately 44,000 students across more than 64 charter schools and one direct-run school. Recognized for its unique governance model and strong community ties, New Orleans Public Schools (NOLA-PS) is committed to fostering educational environments that reflect the city's rich cultural heritage, vibrancy, and diversity. With a focus on improving educational outcomes and ensuring equity, NOLA-PS aims to lead in public education reform.

Charter schools operate under the authority of NOLA-PS, with autonomy granted by the state legislature, Board policy, and their charter management agreements. NOLA-PS is responsible for holding charter management organizations accountable to the standards set by the state and the elected school board members. To evaluate charter operators’ success and their continued management, NOLA-PS uses the Charter School Accountability Formula (CSAF) as the guiding criteria.

Position Description

The Orleans Parish School Board (OPSB) is accepting applications for a dynamic and visionary leader to serve as the Superintendent of NOLA-PS. This individual will lead NOLA-PS in its mission to provide an equitable and high-quality education to every student in New Orleans, while addressing disparities and fostering excellence in all areas of academic achievement. The Superintendent must demonstrate a deep commitment to ensuring that all students, particularly those from historically underserved communities, have the resources and opportunities they need to succeed.

NOLA-PS is a unique and diverse school district that has undergone significant transformation in the past two decades. The Superintendent carries out administrative functions by following the policies adopted by the Board; executes all decisions made by the Board concerning the operation of the school system; and serves as the executive officer of the school district and secretary to the Board. The seven-member Board, the Superintendent, and the central office staff are responsible for setting student, program, and operational performance standards.

As the nation’s first district-wide charter school system, the district offers a blend of charter schools, each with varying levels of autonomy, and a direct-run school. NOLA-PS serves as an authorizer for public charter schools operating in Orleans Parish.  The Superintendent is responsible for setting and implementing the CSAF that fosters student achievement while respecting each charter organization’s school-based decision-making autonomy. The Superintendent is also responsible for academic and organizational performance at district-run schools. This role is an extraordinary opportunity to lead a vibrant, diverse, and resilient school district in one of the most culturally rich cities in the United States.

The Superintendent shall be asked to set a vision and implement the priorities set by the Board as seen in its vision statement, NOLA-PS Evolve Strategic Plan, Five-Year Portfolio Plan, and Portrait of a Graduate. The individual selected as Superintendent must master the operational aspects of managing the NOLA-PS central office, authorize and hold accountable charter organizations for the administration of schools, directly running schools, and engaging the community in sharing the responsibility for achieving our aspirational goals and objectives.  We are seeking a superintendent with remarkable skills and experiences for our unique portfolio of schools, who will deliver on our promise to create great citizens.

As required by law, NOLA Public Schools is an equal opportunity employer and does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, genetic information, or any other basis prohibited by law.

Applications may be subject to release under the Louisiana Public Records Act, La. R.S. 44:1, et seq.
