Superintendent Henderson Lewis Invites NOLA Community, Anyone Who Loves a Teacher to ‘Ring a Bell, Bang a Pan and Make Some Noise’ to Salute Teachers on Tuesday, May 5 at 9 a.m.
NEW ORLEANS – (April 30, 2020) - As NOLA Public Schools (NOLA-PS) continues to provide critical resources and help to students and families adjusting to distance-learning in the age of COVID-19, our teachers have been there every step of the way. In honor of National Teacher Appreciation Day, NOLA-PS and Cox Communications are partnering to launch the “NOLA Morning Bell,” campaign to thank our incredible teachers for all their hard work in supporting student learning and development during this unprecedented time.
On Tuesday, May 5 at 9 a.m., NOLA-PS and Cox Communications are inviting all New Orleans residents to join in and thank our amazing teachers by ringing a bell, banging a pan, clapping their hands and making some noise to salute our teachers. The campaign was inspired by those in New York City cheering for the doctors and frontline workers every evening. Those who plan to join NOLA-PS and Cox in celebrating our teachers, should share their videos and salutes on social media using the tag #NOLAMorningBell.
"Every morning our teachers have been working hard to keep classrooms open virtually for 45,000 students throughout Orleans Parish; amid these unprecedented times that have forced school closures and all of us to be apart, that is something you better believe we will make some noise and celebrate,” said NOLA-PS Superintendent Dr. Henderson Lewis, Jr. “Though classrooms may look a bit different, the coursework remains the same thanks to the dedication efforts of our teachers and schools. I want to extend my immense gratitude to all of the educators in the parish and I hope that all New Orleanians and surrounding Parishes can join me in celebrating all our incredible teachers on Tuesday, May 5 at 9 a.m.”

NEW ORLEANS – (April 29, 2020) - NOLA Public Schools (NOLA-PS) has announced that meal distribution at its city-wide feeding sites will be delayed an hour this morning due to the inclement weather. Distribution will begin at 10 a.m. this morning, instead of 9 a.m. We thank the public for understanding as we ensure our staff at sites remain safe until the storms pass.
Since Monday, March 16, approximately 660,000 meals and counting have been served to students in Orleans Parish.
Citywide Feeding Program Schedule:
• Every Monday, meals will be provided for two days.
• Every Wednesday, meals will be provided for three days.
• Community Feeding sites will NOT be open on Tuesday, Thursday or Friday.
• Service Hours: 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.
• Families wishing to access information on child nutrition resources should visit the District’s webpage at https://nolapublicschools.com/covid19/nutrition. This webpage has the most up-to-date listing of where food services are available.
Students over 18 that are enrolled in public K-12 schools, including students with disabilities through age 22, are also eligible for free meals at open sites.
• Students do not need to be present to receive meals. Parents or caregivers may pick up meals on behalf of the students within their household.
• Child nutrition resources are available to those under 18 years of age and those who currently attend a public school.

OPSB Seeks to Fill Interim District 5 School Board Member Seat; Round 2 of OneApp open until May 6

This necessary action is an effective way to slow the spread of COVID-19 across our city and state. The District will issue updates to the public with developments every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. OPSB SEEKS TO FILL INTERIM DISTRICT 5 SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER SEAT:
Due to the resignation of District 5 School Board Member Ben Kleban, which will be effective on June 15, 2020, the Orleans Parish School Board (OPSB) will receive Letters of Interest from qualified individuals seeking to fill the District 5 seat on an interim basis. To be a school board member the person must be at least 18 years old, a resident in Louisiana for the preceding two years and domiciled for the preceding year in the district to which he or she is being appointed. [La. R.S. 17:52(E)(1)].

DONORSCHOOSE ASSISTING TEACHERS TO KEEP KIDS LEARNING:
In an effort to help teachers and students during this unprecedented time. DonorsChoose has established a way to let teachers in highest-poverty schools send their students personalized education care packages, with Keep Kids Learning. This fund will be used to provide teachers $1,000 in funding credits to use on select categories of education-related items. Teachers will use these credits to order learning resources and distribute them to students — with the option to ship resources directly to students’ homes. SCHOOL FACILITY CLOSURES TO STAY IN AFFECT FOR REMAINDER OF SCHOOL YEAR
NOLA Public Schools respects Gov. John Bel Edwards’ proclamation extending school facility closures across the state through the end of this school year due to the COVID-19 public health crisis.
As a district, we have been committed to supporting the whole child throughout this crisis and will remain committed through the last day of school, even though that last day of school this year will be at home. In collaboration with schools, we are leading the way, locally and nationally, by providing students with the technology, meals, health services and remote learning they need to grow and succeed for the remainder of this school year. These services will continue as we complete this school year and we applaud the countless staff members, teachers and administrators who have consistently pulled together to make these efforts happen for our families.
The state has already waived the need for LEAP testing this year as well as the requirements that students be in school a certain number of days to move to the next level. We will get through this together. We are actively working with school leaders to ensure parents receive updates on requirements for the remainder of the school year, graduations and potential summer school options as they are finalized. We appreciate the public’s understanding as we work to ensure our students are served across the district, even in this trying and often quickly changing time.
CONTINUOUS LEARNING – SCHOOLS DISTRIBUTE TECH RESOURCES TO STUDENTS
NOLA-PS procured 10,000 Chromebooks and nearly 8,000 Wi-Fi hotspots in an effort to improve distanced learning for NOLA-PS students in need. Schools have begun distributing Chromebooks and Wi-Fi hotspots to students. Distribution schedules vary from school to school. Each Chromebook underwent configuration to be compliant with the appropriate licenses as well as receiving email domains specific to the schools utilizing them. The T-Mobile Hotspots also had to be configured with internet filters in compliance with the Children’s Information Protection Act.
CHILD NUTRITION
Families in need of a ride to the feeding sites can use a free ride code from Lyft. The following code will be valid during Citywide Feeding Program service hours on Mondays and Wednesdays.

Cox Extends Free Service for Students Until July 15

WHAT’S NEW:
CONTINUOUS LEARNING – COX COMMUNICATIONS EXTENDS CORONAVIRUS RESPONSE OFFER FOR CONNECT2COMPETE WITH FREE SERVICE FOR STUDENTS UNTIL JULY 15
Recognizing that students will remain home to finish out the school year, Cox has extended free Connect2Compete service, the company’s low-cost internet offer for families with a K-12 student at home until Wednesday, July 15. Remote service support is also extended to ensure ease of implementation while students continue to learn at home during the Coronavirus pandemic. Customers that sign-up between now and May 15 are eligible for this offer and will receive free service until July 15.
The Cox Connect2Compete program is available to families who:
• Have at least one child that is a K-12 student at home.
• Participate in one of these government subsidies programs: The National School Lunch Program, SNAP, TANF or Public Housing.
• Are not a current Cox Internet customer.
